Renting in Cameroon: a tenant's guide

What to check, pay and sign when renting a house, apartment or studio in Cameroon.

Visit before you pay

Never send a deposit for a place you or a trusted person has not seen. Advance-fee rent scams are common.

Agree the advance and deposit in writing

Landlords often ask for several months in advance plus a deposit. Write down the amounts, what the deposit covers and when it is returned.

Sign a lease and keep receipts

A written lease protects both sides. Ask for a receipt for every payment, including Mobile Money transfers.

Check utilities

Confirm separate water and electricity meters and who pays which bills.

General information only, not legal advice. Check current rules with a notary, lawyer or the relevant office.
